Habitat Charlotte, NC – Help Us
Thanks to all who came to support Habitat for Humanity, Charlotte, on Saturday, January 31st! It always surprises me how many volunteers give up their warm beds for a cold morning of brisk and often painful labor. Of course, I never heard anyone complain, and it’s incredibly motivating.
This Saturday had one of the biggest turn outs yet, with participants from several corporations and local banks (Bank of America, Wachovia, etc.) – that’s exactly the type of support that this organization needs the most in light of current economical developments. Having spoken with the event organizers and AmeriCorps staff, I found out that the number of accepted applications for Habitat-built houses has decreased dramatically in Charlotte (and no doubt, around the country).
Due to scarcity of volunteers, sponsors, and the growing abundance of applicants who meet Habitat’s financial criteria, very few new families are put in the que. Home ownership is arguably one of the most essential aspects of a successful and enduring community; it can truly transform lives, promote dignity and responsibility, and enhance self-esteem and living standards of a family. It’s a shame that qualified applicants are being rejected.
