April 25, 2009 Build Day!
Build day events are a great opportunity to meet interesting people, learn new skills, and help your neighbors in the Charlotte community. On April 25th, 2009, Habitat Young Professionals will be participating in sheathing the exterior walls of a future home. So what is sheathing? Most new walls need sheathing to strengthen them, to act as a nailing base for siding, and/or to boost insulation. Essentially, there are two types of sheathing, structural and non-structural:
- Structural Sheathing: this type of sheathing is integral to the house’s structure and ties together wall studs, contributing shear strength and rigidity while forming a solid nailing base for siding materials. Most structural sheathings do not add much insulation value (ex. plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), waferboard, and exterior gypsum board)
- Non-structural Sheathing: unlike structural sheathing, this type of sheathing does not add strength to house’s strength; however, it increases the walls’ insulation value considerably (ex. xtruded polystyrene or polyisocyanurate siding).
