Mother’s Day Every Day Gifts

pledgeformoms.org_mothers dayAs if you really needed an excuse to get your mom a gift! Mother’s Day is one of the happiest days of the year for mothers across the globe, a day dedicated specifically to honoring the giving, kindness, and compassion only a mom can possess. From Mother Goose to Mother Earth, Mother’s Day is a celebration of all those qualities that make our moms unique, strong, and beautiful. So what can you get the person that brought you into this world through sweat, tears, and 34 hours of labor (she never forgets to remind you)? Let’s get down to the basics of Mother’s Day gifts with some basic ideas:

  1. Gift Basket – some of you may be annoyed that this old and quite trite gift idea is even on the list, but you will be surprised how far it can really go with the right concept in mind. Is your mom huge gourmet chocolate fan? Why not surprise her with an assortment of exotic candy she’s never tired before. Is your mom an eco-chic diva? Give her a basket of Terressentials goodies or Burt’s Bees products. Please don’t go out and buy a generic Bath & Body basket (even if you mom told you she really liked it the last time you gave her one). Don’t be lazy! Put your thinking cap on.

  2. Wine – like a fine wine, a woman grows more wonderful with age, and I am certain your mother will appreciate the parallel. Not all moms are big on wine, but she will definitely be impressed with your show of sophistication (or at least your valiant attempt). Still not convinced about this gift? There are plenty of simple ideas on this list!

  3. Perfume – ask your dad what kind of perfume your mother wears (unless you already know). As a back up plan you can always sneak into her room and scope it out for yourself (her favorite one is most likely the one that’s almost empty). She will not only be flattered with your thoughtfulness, but also be touched that you know something so personal.

  4. iPod – don’t be fooled by that perfect pot roast and soft chocolate chip cookies; your mom is not just a great cook and caretaker. Does she like gardening? Power-walking? Sky diving? Make her activities more enjoyable by pre-loading her iPod with songs from her teens and 20s (if you know her favorite color and music, that’s a plus!). Trust me, your mother is just as gadget-crazy as you are.

  5. Card – perhaps the most popular gift is a paper card (or even e-card)… don’t underestimate it’s simple, yet deeply emotional appeal (remember that mess you made for your mom out of macaroni and construction paper? or those stick figures and flowers you scribbled in crayons of all colors?) . The only reason that it’s so far down the list is because it has grown so predictable and impersonal (thanks Hallmark), but you can still make it special. Not everyone can afford to get his or her mother what she really deserves, especially in these difficult times.

  6. Framed Picture of You & Mom – mothers are very sentimental creatures, and even so simple a gesture as a framed picture will speak volumes (especially to mom). Frames come in many shapes and sizes and you don’t have to go with a generic “I Love Mom.” Iin fact, she will appreciate it more if you put a little thought into it. Another idea is to grab one of those photo-tree type frames and give mom a whole story book of cool images. Many popular photo websites even offer album and painting options, which can be customized to reflect your personal style. 3. Flowers – roses are red, violets are blue, you mom is the best, and she loves you!

  7. Tickets to a Show – taking your mom to see a new Broadway play, or even treating her to a dinner theater outing is a great way to strengthen your bond and celebrate Mother’s Day. Not only will she love to get out of the house and get dressed up, she will enjoy spending time with you (trust me, she’s missed you terribly ever since you learned how to walk)

  8. Hug – don’t underestimate the power of a really good hug. It’s free. It feels good. And you can give as many of them as you want.

As Mother’s Day comes only once a year, many people tend to overlook the unerring dedication and tireless contribution of mothers to society throughout the rest of the year. Do you really need a special holiday to honor the one who gave you life? Treat every day like it’s Mother’s Day.
