June 27th, 2009 Habitat Build Day!

Pledge For Moms is participating in the Habitat build event coming up this Saturday, June 27th – we are going to be priming and painting a house that we’ve worked on in March (see March 21st Event and Slide Show)! It’s really exciting to participate in this last step of the building process and help mothers and families finally realize their dreams. Come join us at this wonderful event here:
WHEN: Saturday, June 27th, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
Painting “for Dummies”
So you’ve never touched a brush in your life, but would still like to help Habitat… no problem! First, it’s really not as hard as it sounds (or at least not as challenging as some of the other events, such as Sheathing or Dry-walling!), but if would really like the extra info before the big day, you may find the tips below very helpful:
- Wear something OLD. You WILL get paint on yourself!
- When you get on site, you will be divided into small groups of 3-4 people and assigned a room – brushes, rollers and rags will be provided (Note: it’s the only time during any construction project, where you will not be instructed to wear a hard-hat)
- If you notice that a surface is not clean or level (or not sanded down), this is something that has to be fixed before you start painting
- None of the rooms has any flooring, so you don’t have to worry about spills or dripping, but you should avoid windows if you don’t have a steady hand (though the paint is water-based, it’s never fun to have to clean windows
- When you start rolling, make sure that you don’t run it to fast, because it WILL spray you and everyone next to you; also, in order to avoid pooling and dripping, I recommend that you start each roll from the bottom up
- Doors and frames will need several coats of paint as the wood is very absorbent
- Yes, you’re participating in the final stage of the building process of a low-income house, but it doesn’t mean that you can just slap some paint on the walls and call it a day. Remember, you are an important part of making someone’s dream come true and you should treat it as such.
Don’t forget – in the summer-time, all events are scheduled to run from 8AM to 12PM because of the really hot weather. Please bring plenty of water and some friends, because painting is one of those activities that always leads to horse-play (and unlike any other event, it’s actually not a safety issue!).
Have fun!

About Pledge For Moms
Every woman is a daughter and every man is a son – it is our duty to protect and advance the rights of women so that they may have the opportunity to give birth to and raise children in a safe and healthy environment. How would a boy remember his first day of school without her soft kisses and words of encouragement? How will a girl become a woman without her guidance and support? The Pledge For Moms Project is a non-profit website is tailored to encourage the online community to take part in raising awareness of the suffering of our sisters, daughters, and mothers across the globe and to set an example in the community. If you are interested in having a direct impact on decreasing maternal mortality rates in one of the most effected areas in the world, please DONATE to the Save-a-Mother Project. If you would like to become a micro-lender to a poor business-woman in need, make a difference through Kiva.org
