Euna Lee and Laura Ling Pardoned
Deep thanks to everyone who signed the Petition for the release of two American journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, who were in North Korea in march shooting a documentary when they were arrested on charges of illegal entry (more than 88,000 signatures were collected since March). The two women had been inmates at a “political offense village” – a place which utilizes a number of inhumane correctional methods, such as beatings, maiming, and forced exercise – and have been released today, Tuesday August 4th, 2009. Thanks to the efforts of former President Bill Clinton and the ‘kind heart’ of the capricious and sour little Kim Jong Il, the two women can return to their families safely and in one piece.
Hillary Clinton, who is headed for a trade conference in Kenya, incurred the fury of Pyongyang’s leaders last month by likening them to unruly children demanding attention, adding that they did not deserve it, and I wholeheartedly agree. The two journalists, whatever their misconduct, were harshly sentenced and used as a bargaining chip in a nuclear arms stand off between US and North Korea. Though they walk free, the injustice of their imprisonment and the violations of human rights they attempted to expose will not go unnoticed.
