PledgeForMoms.org was invited to both participate in and observe the building process of a single family unit in Charlotte, NC for Joseph L.’s home. Though I have volunteered with Habitat for almost two years, I have never had the chance to see an entire building process from beginning to end, and this house will always have a special place in my heart. Featured below is a gallery of images taken the first day of framing. The morning started with Joseph’s prayer and a thorough safety speech, as the volunteers regarded the long and empty concrete slab that was supposed to take the shape of a house by the end of the day. This Saturday, July 18th, we joined Habitat for Humanity in their Critical Home Repair Project, a very special and unique effort that is changing the face of the Charlotte community with a more effective use of resources – sincerest thanks to all who came, especially to Jason, Reid, and Chris of Wachovia Financial, and Chad (our patient site leader). I hope to see you all at the next event! Safe and clean homes are some of the most essential aspects of a successful and enduring community and volunteers just like you help make working families realize this dream – great job!

“We’ll be able to get homeowners in em’ for half the cost, it’s a more effective use of our donor funds,” stated Burt Green, the executive director of Habitat Charlotte in reference to the unique non-new construction projects he has been spearheading. Habitat Critical Home Repair (HCHR) was launched in 2007 and serves economically disadvantaged homeowners in Charlotte, working intensively with families to conduct urgent home repairs. Volunteering this month is an exciting opportunity to learn more about Habitat and the different ways we serve families in need.

This Saturday, June 27th, we had a really great turn-out at the Habitat for Humanity Charlotte Young Professionals build event, allowing us to finish painting both townhouse units in 4 hours – sincerest thanks to all who came, especially to Jason, Reed, and Chris of Wachovia Financial, and Chad (our patient site leader). I hope to see you all at the next event! Thanks to all who came to support Habitat for Humanity, Charlotte, on Saturday, January 31st! It always surprises me how many volunteers give up their warm beds for a cold morning of brisk and often painful labor. Of course, I never heard anyone complain, and it’s incredibly motivating.
